I have been vegan since October 2014. What convinced me was reading about the cardiovascular benefits of a 100% plant-based diet low in oils. My grandfather died in his mid-40s from a heart attack and my father in his late 60s. My blood pressure had hovered at the prehypertension level at way too early of an age; the writing was on the wall. Since going vegan and cutting out oils my blood pressure has dropped and I feel much better. I thought it would be difficult to cut out cheese and it hasn’t been. The only difficulty is going to restaurants that haven’t gotten the message that healthy food can be delicious!
I became vegetarian in 1992 and gradually worked my way fully vegan in 2008. My initial driver was compassion for animals, but learning about the environmental impact of non-vegan diets helped me strengthen my resolve. More recently, I've been excited to move from vegan to a true whole foods, plant-based diet as much as possible, avoiding processed flours, sugars and oils. The health benefits are well-established and continue to be a strong motivation for me. Also, I love to cook and try new things! My favorite joke when talking to restaurant staff is: "Other than being vegan, I'm not picky at all!"
About Our Site
This site is designed to be a convenient, public and searchable resource for vegans living in Northwest Ohio or Southeast Michigan, for vegans who are visiting the area and for any folks who are curious about how they could eat healthier. One of our goals is to encourage and support restaurants that are doing a good job, as well as to nudge those that could do better. We will do our best to ask every question we can when visiting restaurants, but we also encourage you to still ask when you go to these restaurants as menus, dishes and preparation methods often change. We welcome your suggestions and feedback.
