It's a pizza shop inside Ottawa Tavern. They are an outgrowth from Pizza Cat, a new pizza shop on Monroe (which as of yet doesn't have vegan options). You can make your own pizza, with options for crust, sauce, veggies and protein, or you can order specially arranged pizzas. We ordered the two specialty pizzas that were vegan.
The Contaminator is made on their vegan hemp-based crust which had a nice bitter taste. Toppings included roasted garlic, beets, spinach, Daiya, red onion, vegan mac and cheese and splashed with beet juice. The pizza was a creation of a surrealist artist from the Old West East.
We also ordered the Cauliflower Mushroom (**NO LONGER VEGAN--PLEASE SEE UPDATE ABOVE**), which had their secret vegan sauce, Daiya cheese and mushrooms on a cauliflower crust. Yes, the crust is made of cauliflower, though it tasted similar to a traditional pizza crust.
Both pizzas were delicious, creative, and totally vegan! Pizza Kitten takes pride in serving vegans. They make sure that there is no cross-contamination on the vegan pizzas with other non-vegan pizzas. And there are lots of other options for vegans, including a vegan marinara sauce, and soyriza, a vegan sausage, along with many other vegetable options.
We loved our pizzas and felt like these vegan creations were truly something special, not just an option to make sure there was something to serve us. These were special creations that used the unique flavor profiles to create something delicious just for vegans.
We'll be back and we hope you check them out!
