Update 4/7/18

We were excited to check out the new downtown location today. Same great vegan options and loved the atmosphere.

9/11/16

We had a delightful meal at Fowl & Fodder on Saturday evening. This restaurant prides itself on locally-sourced ingredients from sustainable farms. We went there a couple years ago soon after it first opened and found that there was little to choose for vegans (a lot of focus on meat and cheeses). But we tried it again after reading on their web site that they had vegan options (hint to restaurants, please be open about your vegan-friendly choices!). We are glad that we went again.

First off, the server was very knowledgeable about a vegan diet and helpful in navigating the menu. We had three vegan options for dinner: a black bean veggie burger, Korean BBQ tempeh tacos and an Asian peanut salad. We opted for the tacos and the Asian peanut salad. The tacos were great; the tempeh almost tasted like it was salt-cured and had a rich BBQ taste. The tacos were covered with fresh shredded carrots. With the tacos, we had a choice of sides. Vegan options include raw kale chips, potato wedges, white bean salad, a small salad or apple slaw. We chose the slaw, which had a sweet and vinegary taste, and had the rare (at least in restaurants) combination of tasting delicious and being healthy. The Asian peanut salad had a kale base, apples, green onions, carrots, cabbage and delicious Asian peanut sauce. The salad had surprises in every bite and made for a great entrée.

Fowl & Fodder has several smoothies that are vegan (made with almond milk) and they serve fresh juices as well. They also serve breakfast 7 days a week, and have one vegan option: avocado toast. We look forward to trying that as there is such a dearth of good, hearty vegan breakfast options in the region.

We love the commitment of Fowl & Fodder to locally-sourced, organic food. Efforts like this help create a demand for better agricultural practices in Northwest Ohio. Also, Fowl & Fodder works with Beyond Basics Health Consulting (BBHC), a nutrition consulting company in Toledo. There are BBHC approved items on the menu, all vegan. We like that a restaurant is committed as well to helping people make healthy choices!

Fowl & Fodder’s menu changes on a seasonal basis. This review was based on the Late Summer menu. We look forward to returning again!

In our quest for good vegan food, we decided to drive up to Saline, Michigan (slightly less than an hour drive from most of the Toledo area) and visit Salt Springs Brewery, a place suggested by several members of the Toledo Area Vegans and Vegetarians Facebook Group.
(Here's the link to the Facebook group in case you're not already a member!)

We ordered the Tempeh Reuben (make sure to let them know you're vegan and they'll use vegan mozzarella and a vegan sammy sauce) and the Incredibly Tasty Tofu Sandwich, along with a serving of fries and a side salad. The Tempeh Reuben was delicious, with chunks of tender tempeh slathered with a delicious sauce as well as sauerkraut made from Ann Arbor's artisanal company The Brinery. This sandwich was delicious and well worth the drive.

The tofu sandwich was very nice too and was covered with a sweet-and-sour type of sauce. That along with the kimchi made this a very creative sandwich as well. The fries were pretty good and the side salad was simple but a nice contrast to the more heavier pub fare of the rest of the meal.

For dessert, there was a cookie option but we chose a slice of chocolate cake as well as a slice of carrot cake, both vegan, and made by Avalon Bakery in Detroit. They were rich, with a nice amount of frosting, and the portions were just the way we like them: reasonable (we have little self-control when it comes to desserts and so it's best to have a modest size!).

They also do flatbreads and can substitute Daiya cheese on any of their pizzas. Next time we go back, we will have the Local Mushroom pizza but we're glad that this time we stopped with our two sandwiches and two pieces of cake! This is a brewery too, and so they have a range of craft beers all brewed in-house, ranging from light beer (Kolsch) to IPAs to stouts. They even have suggestions on pairings with the food. There are also wine options with special blends from Michigan wineries.

Finally, Wednesdays are Vegan Wednesday with special dishes created just for that day. They post the menu by 5 p.m. on their Facebook page. We are excited to make the drive on a Wednesday. But rest assured that their normal menu has lots of great vegan options!

One final note… our waiter was very knowledgeable about vegan options. A little bit of training can make a big difference.

Okay, one last note! Note to Toledo-area restaurants: We shouldn't have to drive to Michigan to get a vegan Reuben sandwich!
