We had a delightful meal this week at The Beirut. It is the sister restaurant of Byblos, a restaurant that we had previously reviewed. The menu is very similar, with a focus on both Mediterranean food and Italian cuisine.

For dinner, we had appetizers of baba ghanoush (delightfully smoky), hommus, artichoke hearts and sautéed mushrooms (ask for them to cook in oil instead of butter).  For entrees, we had the vegetarian spaghetti and the falafel sandwich.

In terms of differences from Byblos, we found the Beirut pita bread to be fluffier and instead of a falafel salad (available at Byblos), the Beirut offers a falafel sandwich, which was delicious. There may be other differences between menus. But in general, the food is delicious, the atmosphere is very pleasant and for vegans, you can get a great meal.

We were excited to try Za Za after hearing from a Vegan Toledo reader that they have vegan pizza.  We ordered Z’Vegan pizza (the server asked if we wanted cheese on it!) as well as the vegetarian plate, which includes hummus, falafel, vegetarian grape leaves and tabbouli.

We got our food quickly and devoured both the pizza and the vegetarian plate.  The pizza had a thin crust and was covered with a tomato-based pizza sauce, spinach, artichokes, black olives, Roma tomatoes and onions. The Mediterranean platter was tasty as well.

There are other options too, including falafel and grape leave platters, a falafel bowl, lentil soup and fattoush and tabbouli salads. Their menu has clearly labeled vegan items, which is always a plus for vegans.

We enjoyed the variety of choices—pizza and Mediterranean—and will make sure to reward them for having vegan options by having a return visit.

You would think Italian restaurants would be a natural fit for vegans, but in actuality most handmade pasta includes egg. We decided to check out Ciao to see how they could accommodate vegans and communicated with them in advance. Their gluten-free penne was vegan and so we headed out last Saturday night and figured if nothing else, we’d have a good bottle of Italian wine.

So we both ordered the pasta, one primavera style with a garlic and oil-based sauce with lots of vegetables including asparagus, peppers and zucchini. The other was a tomato-basil based sauce with broccoli and mushrooms. We had salads as starters—a simple salad with greens, oil dressing and tomatoes.  At each step of the way, we stressed the importance of holding off all cheese, as it has been our experience at many restaurants that cheese (and added oil) is often added to the plate as a default.  We did have a nice bottle of Italian wine to complement our dinner. All of their desserts were non-vegan, so we shared a glass of port-style wine from California. (Thank you, Uber!)

To be honest, this wouldn’t be a destination stop for us, though we were happy to get a vegan meal. There is comfort in knowing that if somebody really wanted to go to Ciao, you could have a pretty good meal. And good wine!
