Update (9/28/16):

We were so happy to get this reply from Swig on Facebook today:
"Right on! First off we would like to thank you for not dragging through the mud and acknowledging that we are by virtue a meat based establishment. Secondly, I could not agree more with you. I say let's do this. We have some big events this weekend bu
t I PROMISE you I will hit the lab on Monday. Your suggestions from other places has my mind reeling. This is going to be fun. Please keep an eye out over the next few weeks because we're going to get funky. Cheers friends!!"
Way to go, Swig!!!

Okay, we’re biased toward Swig because they have perhaps the best rotating craft beer selection in the Toledo area, plus they have the vibe of a cool gastropub, the likes that you would see in Chicago, Columbus or Portland (Maine or Oregon, your pick!). What they don’t have are many vegan options.

They have a roasted hummus plate that is quite good, served with bread and vegetables (we fight over the radishes). And they have a couple of salads that could be made vegan taking off ingredients. We go there and enjoy our hummus and sample their delicious beers or bourbons (they also have an amazing bourbon list).

We get it. They are a charcuterie and pride themselves on making their own sausages and meat-based options. From the looks on our friends’ faces, they do an awesome job at that. We’re not asking them to replace meat with meatless options.

But we’ve been in great meat-based gastropubs throughout the country that have interesting vegan options: spicy buffalo seitan wings in Louisville, a beet meatless burger in Omaha, vegan sloppy joes at Founders in Grand Rapids. The chef at Swig clearly has some talent. We urge them to add 1 or 2 vegan-friendly options to make a hip place even hipper!

There are great options for vegans here, with lots of fresh vegetables and creative ingredients that can be used to build-your-own sandwich. Although the restaurant is known for their meat-heavy sandwiches, there are so many ingredients available that we seem to get a new delight every time we come here.

You pick the bread, the “meats”, and dressing/sauces, and veggies. In terms of meat, the only vegan option is roasted portabello. But with veggies, the choices include, onion, leaf lettuce, olive, sprouts, spring mix, banana peppers, tomato, cucumbers, jalapenos, slaw, kraut, pickles, avocado, roasted bell peppers, basil, spinach, grilled asparagus, and pine nuts (they also list roasted mushrooms and onions, which we were told were cooked in butter—though the roasted portabella was not). Sauces include whole grain mustard, English mustard, Dijon mustard, roasted garlic spread, horseradish, and roasted red pepper spread.

You can order your sandwich grilled or cold. We nearly always chose grilled. The staff are always friendly and helpful in researching ingredients. We recommend JB Sarnies for creative vegan sandwiches. We like JB Sarnies so much that we had them cater our wedding (along with Zingo’s).

We were strolling around Levis Commons and saw a sign outside Schakolad Chocolate Factory advertising vegan and gluten-free Halloween desserts. We went inside and were well-rewarded.

Vegan chocolates are all clearly labeled and there were 10 different varieties when we went, ranging from dark chocolate walnut clusters, a hot pepper chocolate and chocolate covered pretzels. We bought two of each and will be sampling them over the next few day(s)! There were also some other vegan dark chocolate specialties. We bought a dark chocolate cigar and look to “smoke” that soon!

Vegans know that dark chocolate is a healthier option and often (but not always) milk free. Schakolad had lots to choose from and would be a great place to shop for an after-dinner treat or a gift basket for a friend. Our only disappointment was that there weren’t any vegan caramels. We’ve had to turn to specialty stores online for those treats.

Schakolad makes it easy to shop for vegans: clearly labeled with lots of varieties. Every thing we’ve tasted so far has been good. Check this place out!

We decided to check out J. Alexanders after an early comment on our Facebook page suggested that they had the best vegan burger in Toledo (please provide more recommendations everybody!). We went for dinner on a Monday evening.

We did order the veggie burger. To make it vegan, ask to hold the cheese. In addition, they typically do an egg wash on the bun. You can ask them to provide a different type of bread. We ordered it with multigrain bread, which was good. The burger had a rich feel, almost a barbecue sauce feel to it. With the burger, you get a choice of sides. We chose French fries, which were thin and crispy, very delicious. If you want healthier options, you can order broccoli (no parm cheese, please), orzo & wild rice, Israeli couscous or the daily vegetable.

We also had the Rattlesnake pasta, modified by the chef to be vegan (no chicken, no cream sauce). There were healthy portions of vegetables added, including broccoli, and it had a nice Southwestern seasoning. We found it a bit oily for our tastes though. We were going to order fire-grilled artichokes for an appetizer (made vegan without the herb butter), but they were unfortunately out that evening.

The server was very helpful and knowledgeable and was eager to help us find a good meal. Her positive attitude really made a difference; servers often seem burdened by vegans. The vegan burger was one of the best that we’ve had in the area and so if you’re up for that, we’d recommend trying J. Alexander's. They provide a fine dining feel without super high prices. They have a nice wine by the glass menu and a good selection of craft beers. Overall, we had a nice time.
