Update (9/28/16):

We were so happy to get this reply from Swig on Facebook today:
"Right on! First off we would like to thank you for not dragging through the mud and acknowledging that we are by virtue a meat based establishment. Secondly, I could not agree more with you. I say let's do this. We have some big events this weekend bu
t I PROMISE you I will hit the lab on Monday. Your suggestions from other places has my mind reeling. This is going to be fun. Please keep an eye out over the next few weeks because we're going to get funky. Cheers friends!!"
Way to go, Swig!!!

Okay, we’re biased toward Swig because they have perhaps the best rotating craft beer selection in the Toledo area, plus they have the vibe of a cool gastropub, the likes that you would see in Chicago, Columbus or Portland (Maine or Oregon, your pick!). What they don’t have are many vegan options.

They have a roasted hummus plate that is quite good, served with bread and vegetables (we fight over the radishes). And they have a couple of salads that could be made vegan taking off ingredients. We go there and enjoy our hummus and sample their delicious beers or bourbons (they also have an amazing bourbon list).

We get it. They are a charcuterie and pride themselves on making their own sausages and meat-based options. From the looks on our friends’ faces, they do an awesome job at that. We’re not asking them to replace meat with meatless options.

But we’ve been in great meat-based gastropubs throughout the country that have interesting vegan options: spicy buffalo seitan wings in Louisville, a beet meatless burger in Omaha, vegan sloppy joes at Founders in Grand Rapids. The chef at Swig clearly has some talent. We urge them to add 1 or 2 vegan-friendly options to make a hip place even hipper!

I’m a new vegan and still figuring out the ropes but when my food came there was a sour cream sauce on top but when I ordered I said no dairy. When the owner gave me my food I said I couldn’t eat it because I’m vegan and he shook his head like I was an idiot and like I didn’t read the menu right. Not nice :(
