There are lots of Mediterranean options in Toledo and there are lots of Italian choices as well. Byblos combines the best of both worlds in one place and provides lots of nice options for vegans.

Most of the vegan choices come from the Lebanese side of the menu. They have delicious vegan appetizers: hummus, great smoky baba ghanouj (a dip made from eggplant), vegetarian grape leaves (served cold), fava beans, artichoke hearts, sautéed mushrooms and/or green peppers, and sautéed zucchini. When ordering, make sure to let them know that you’re vegan. The mushrooms (and possibly other sautéed vegetables) are usually cooked in butter. They can cook them without butter. One of our guests who has had them both ways didn’t notice any difference!

In terms of salads, they have fatoosh, tabbouleh and falalfel. In terms of Italian options, the only vegan option is vegetarian spaghetti (vegan without the parmesan cheese).

At our last visit, we shared the baba ghanouj, artichoke hearts and mushrooms with our table of six, and then had the falafel salad and the vegetarian spaghetti. All was delicious. The falafel was cooked nice and crispy and was very tasty. The spaghetti doesn’t have a traditional sauce but is covered with chunks of delicious vegetables, including large portions of tomatoes.

They have a nice selection of wines, including some interesting Lebanese choices as well as a full bar. Byblos is one of those classic restaurants in Toledo that has generated a loyal customer base. We like the variety of vegan options and encourage you to check it out!

College students have much better dining options than they did in the years we went to college. The BGSU dining center at The Oaks offers some great options for vegans. The Oaks is a large buffet with different food stations throughout, including a salad bar, a pizza station, a dessert bar and several rotating theme stations. But of particular interest to vegans is Shoots, which is a vegan station that provides several vegan options for every lunch and dinner, Monday through Friday (open to the public 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the school year).

They promise 3 items (1 entrée and 2 sides) each meal plus dessert. We have eaten there somewhat frequently and generally they meet that pledge. Today for lunch, there were two types of calzones (one spicy and seemingly of a Cuban origin), vegan garlic bread, and a Tuscan kale salad (with daiya cheese on top of it). No dessert this lunch, but nearly every time there has been a dessert. The food rotates from lunch and dinner and across days, and so there is always a new surprise.

Besides the vegan station, there are many other vegan options throughout the other stations, including a salad bar that has fresh fruit and typical salad vegetables. Often there are other options. Today there was steamed asparagus at one station, as well as several types of fries if you craved something unhealthy (we have not yet checked if they use separate fryers for meat items and fries).

BGSU’s Shoots has received a Compassionate Campus Award from PETA, an award they display proudly. If you are visiting Bowling Green, Shoots is definitely worth a visit (we recommend parking in the metered area outside of the nearby student union or by Dunkin' Donuts, which is in the same building complex as The Oaks). Lunch is slightly less than $10 if paying cash, and a bit more for dinner. Be careful though… it’s often hard to limit your food intake at a buffet. Piling your plate high with vegan food and going back several times can be unhealthy. So eat with restraint!

Cheers to BGSU for providing healthy vegan options!

We enjoyed another amazing visit to 100% plant-based GreenSpace Café in Ferndale! Roasted Brussels Flatbread and Forest Mushroom Gnocchi for entrees and bumpy cake and cookie sandwich for dessert!

Okay, we started this blog to highlight restaurants in NW Ohio that provide good options for vegans and those who want a healthier diet. But there are a few places that we have found that are really worth the drive and GreenSpace Café in Ferndale, Michigan is one of them. GreenSpace is 100% plant-based and so there is no need to navigate the menu or interrogate the server. And it provides a fine dining experience complete with full bar and craft cocktails all the way to many delicious dessert options. It really is worth the hour or so drive.

The menu changes frequently but trust us, you will find something on it that you will adore. For an appetizer, we ordered their Farmer’s Board along with wild mushroom toast. One of the distinctive things about GreenSpace is their delicious nut cheeses. The Farmer’s Board is the vegan equivalent to a cheese and fruit plate and had three delicious vegan cheeses along with figs, crackers, homemade mustard, olives and pickled mushrooms. The mushroom toast had a smoked cashew cheese base along with several types of mushrooms.

For entrees, we had the Macro Bowl and a Salsicce flatbread pizza. The Macro Bowl had a brown rice base and included a mixture of things such as kimchee, roasted sweet potato, tofu and braised collards. The Salsicce pizza was an Italian style pizza with house-made seitan sausage, roasted red peppers and cashew cheese among other things. For dessert, we had a blueberry cobbler and the German chocolate cake.

This place is a vegan paradise. They have items that are labeled “cooking oil free” and others that are labeled “plant perfect,” dishes that are created based on Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn’s Plant Perfect Diet (no nuts, refined sugars, etc.). And the vegan cheeses are truly distinctive and delicious. We have a friend who said “I could never do vegan because I love cheese so much.” We got an order of nut cheese to go just for her.

There are a lot of delicious Mediterranean restaurants in the Toledo area, and nearly all provide good vegan options. Poco Piatti stands out as they focus on tapas-style small plate dishes. Given that there are many vegan options, it’s a great way to try a variety of foods and to share food with others at the table. The menu does not have vegan labels, but the wait staff is well-trained, and our server said they keep a marked menu for them to consult.

Most of the vegetarian small plate dishes are vegan. We started off with a small portion of hummus, which was delicious and less oily than many restaurants. You could clearly taste the garbanzo beans as well as lemon. For all tables, they serve fresh pita bread, which goes wonderfully with the hummus. The pita bread is puffy and made on premise, a little bit more exciting than traditional pita bread. We also ordered sautéed mushrooms, mujadara (a lentil dish), and lubia bi zeit (green beans in a tomato sauce). The mushrooms are cooked crispy, the lentils had delicious pickles and caramelized onions within the dish, and the green beans were quite flavorful. Other vegan small plates include vegetarian grape leaves and roasted cauliflower. Many of the small plates come in small and large sizes. Small tends to be enough food for two people who are sharing; save the large sizes for larger groups.

We also ordered a roasted beet salad that was made vegan by holding off cheese. It had candied nuts, which we were afraid were cooked in butter. But the server kindly checked and they were vegan. She commented that very few of their dishes include butter in the preparation. There are many other salads to choose, and there are pizzas that can be made vegan by withholding cheese (the dough is vegan). There is also a veggie kabob that is vegan.

With our small plates and the salad, we had more than enough food for lunch for two as well as leftovers for lunch the next day. We think Poco Piatti is a great place to go out with omnivore friends. With the small plates, it’s possible to share dishes without worrying about meat spillover and this is a great place to show our omnivore friends that vegan food is delicious.

They have a full bar with a nice wine selection and a good choice of craft beers. This is a great local restaurant that should be high on the list for vegans interested in a fine dining experience.
