We like the vibe of this iconic Bowling Green restaurant along with the awesome beer menu ("No Crap on Tap"). Although there is nothing specifically vegan on the menu, with a few modifications, several things can be made vegan.

We enjoy the Veggie Madness Burrito (without sour cream and cheese), which is loaded with greens and veggies, though it can be fairly dry without those and so last time we asked for avocado to be added (surcharge, though). We also added some of the side of salsa. The Grilled Portobello Cap (without cheese and aioli) and the dip trio (ask for the three salsas) are also good options. They have a variety of salads that can be modified to be vegan. The same fryer is used for both meat and fries, so this is also important to consider with the plantain chips (and you would also need a sauce substitution).

Reverend’s could be more vegan-friendly with just a little effort on their part but if you’re in Bowling Green and want to check out their awesome draft list, you can get a good meal here if you know what to ask for.

SIP (which stands for Socially Infused People) has renovated the old Cricket West coffee shop (previously BIGBY and Sufficient Grounds). The remake is marvelous with lots of attention put into the art work, vibe and furniture. This looks like a place that hipsters can relax and business people can come to do whatever business people do.

They have the typical coffee drinks and teas as well as many snacks. They have a commitment to serving several options of vegan snacks, and serve a variety of Chef Tracy’s awesome paleo vegan concoctions.

Check this place out for some vegan treats and enjoy the new makeover of this place!

The Attic on Adams has a lot of options on their menu, including several vegetarian options that can be made vegan (make sure to emphasize that you want the vegan version!). We have had their vegan version of chili mac (sweet chili with Daiya on it), a vegan brat served with tater tots and the avocado and hummus wrap. Other vegan options include a falafel wrap and vegan mac and cheese. We found our food tasty and to be good vegan bar food (e.g., more rich than healthy).

We applaud The Attic for having vegan options on special occasions, too. They had special menus for Valentine’s Day and for St. Patrick’s Day that included vegan options as well, including a vegan shepherd’s pie and vegan cake. Please check their Facebook page (@AtticonAdams) to keep up with their special events.

Besides having a large number of clearly-labeled vegan options, The Attic has one of the best-curated craft beer tap collections in town, with plenty of options for you to complement your meal. The Attic fills an important space in the mix of vegan dining options in the Toledo area!

Although the big box grocery stores have definitely improved in terms of stocking healthy vegan options, it’s great to wander the aisles of Toledo’s health food markets. Claudia’s is a cornerstone of the Toledo health food market, having been in operation for 35 years. The store is a mixture of food items as well as what must be the largest floor space devoted to nutritional supplements. (We’re not big on nutritional supplements except the required B12, though we know others are. Our preference is to get the nutrition from the food we eat!).

In terms of food, there is a modest space devoted to natural organic produce and then a large amount of freezer space. In addition, there are several aisles of packaged foods as well. There are also lots of environmentally-friendly cleaning and hygiene products.

We wandered the aisles and quickly filled up our two hand baskets with enough food that we needed to grab a cart. We bought a variety of things including imitation cheese, blackberries, bread, chocolate, pasta and nut-based milk. Be sure to still read labels as dairy and meat products are sold here, including an almond cheese that includes some dairy products that we noticed. Claudia’s has a monthly sales flyer that you can access online to learn about the current specials.

We applaud Claudia’s for their commitment to improving the health of the Toledo area. They have workshops and seminars. For example, there is an upcoming class on organic gardening (April 27th).  If you haven’t been to Health Foods by Claudia, it is well worth a visit.

Black Kite Coffee is a staple in the Old West End and serves great strong coffee and has tasty food as well; they try to make sure to have at least one vegan option.

One of their standards is a savory pie, similar to what in the Upper Peninsula is called a pasty. They try to have a meat version and a vegan option. It is vegetables served within a pie crust. When we went, the flavor for the vegan version was labelled Asian Stir Fry, though the one that we had didn’t seem to match up to the description. It had potatoes, onions and tomatoes. It had a comfort food feel, though the food was not very heavy.

On the weekends, they serve brunch as well. Although there were no vegan options on the brunch menu, they offered to modify several of the items to be vegan. We had a buttery greens salad that was fresh, creative and delicious, with a mixture of greens, including mint, shaved fennel, strawberries and capers. There was a bean salad on the side of the pie.

We enjoyed our brunch at Black Kite and thank them for their commitment to having a vegan option. This is a great place to hang out, drink good coffee and nosh on some vegan food.

Toledo is fortunate to have several good Indian restaurants, all which have nice options for vegans. To call Deepam India a restaurant might be a stretch—it’s really a grocery store with a deli, with take-out or dine-in options.

We got two versions of the veggie platter, which included white rice, roti (a piece of wheat bread similar to a tortilla in size) and a choice of two vegetarian entrees.  There were four vegan options and so we got one of each: aloo gobi (cauliflower in a tomato sauce), yellow dal (lentils), cabbage and okra.

The food achieved its taste through a nice use of spices and was less oily than most Indian restaurants in the area. The portions were relatively small for each of the dishes, which meant that in combining all of the food together, we had enough to eat but weren’t overly stuffed.

This is a nice place to check out. The dine in facilities are modest and so don’t go here if you have a romantic date to impress. There are several clean tables at the edge of the store but you will be dining among the aisles of grocery items.

The grocery store is stocked with all of the staples of Indian cuisine and so is worth checking out in its own right, with lots of spices to experiment with in your own kitchen. Also, they have frozen foods, with several delicious varieties of samosas worth checking out.

The food is tasty and their minimal use of oil is to be commended. In our opinion, using lots of oil is an often-used shortcut to make food taste more delicious, but in the long run, minimizing oil is a key to healthy eating.  All in all, Deepam India is worth checking out!
