Tony Packo's is perhaps the most iconic restaurant in the Toledo area, the place that out-of-town visitors are most likely to want to check out. For vegans, this Hungarian-based restaurant that focuses on sausages and chicken paprikas would seem to be an unlikely place to find vegan food.

The Secor restaurant does have a vegan dog on its menu. We ordered it with vegetarian chili on top. The dogs were tasty, though basically the sausage tasted like a tofurky-style brat, which you can find in nearly any grocery store.  We applaud Packo's for having a clearly-labeled vegan option though. You can take your out-of-town guests here and have something to eat yourself.

Note that currently only the Secor restaurant has the vegan option (let us know if you find it elsewhere). Also, the vegetarian chili is vegan and that is available at all of the Packos restaurants. Finally, there is a great pickle and pepper bar with lots of fun and tasty options to try.

We had been meaning to visit Adams Street Cafe for a long time; they are one of a few great restaurants in Downtown Toledo that are only open during the week for lunch (and breakfast in their case). This is a place that prides itself on its meat; their tagline is Fresh, Smoked Meat Everyday on their web site. Have no fear, though, in that they have good vegan options as well.

We had the vegetable roll, the 9-vegetable salad and the Vegetable Hash. The vegetable roll was really a wrap using a thick flour tortilla, packed with corn, chickpeas, mushrooms, asparagus, spinach, cucumber and a romesco sauce. The 9-vegetable salad had a similar but different mixture of vegetables, served with almonds and a very tasty basil vinaigrette. Finally, the vegetable hash had a mixture of sweet potatoes and regular potatoes, with parsnip, kale, turnips, onions, garlic and a chipotle creme sauce made from almonds. We loved all the dishes, though the hash was our favorite. As vegans, we find that sauces can really make or break a vegan dish, and the almond crema sauce on the hash was creative and tasty!

There are rotating specials as well as the regular menu. While we were there, there was a vegan Autumn Hash that had a different mix than the hash we had.  It was sold out by 1 p.m.!  Also, we were excited that Adams Street Cafe opens up at 7 a.m. and serves Johnny Cakes that are vegan as well as breakfast Tempeh Tacos that are vegan.

Don't be scared off by all of the images of meat on their website, nor the pig that is part of their logo. Clearly the owners love their meat, but they also love their vegan customers. Their menu is clearly labeled. All vegan items are labeled with a V (in their cafe, all vegetarian items are also vegan).

And to other restaurateurs, take a note from Adams Street Cafe and get some creative vegan sauces. The sauce really can be the key!
