Update 03/29/17

We were delighted to find on a recent visit to Star of India that, not only did they still have great vegan options on their lunch buffet, but they now have a full vegan dinner menu as well as delicious homemade vegan desserts!

There are several Indian restaurants in the Toledo area and all of them have good vegan options. We are highlighting Star of India first because they have a sign out front advertising that they have vegan food. (This is in contrast to one national sub chain that bragged about converting vegans into meat lovers--would like to see your data!)

We tried Star of India's lunch buffet and when we were there, there were several vegan options, including pakoras (also gluten-free), chana masala and a lentil dish. Although the items weren’t labeled vegan, the server was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about serving vegans.

During lunch, you can also order off the menu (no buffet for dinner, only the menu) and there are lots of vegan options. The server said that all but two vegetarian dishes could be made vegan. In fact, he said that based on one regular customer’s suggestions, the chef had worked on vegan recipes. To us, this showed a great openness as well as demonstrated the power of positive suggestions.

We highly recommend Star of India and applaud their willingness to promote that they serve vegan food!

I am not vegan but I am obsessed with food so I wouldn’t want to miss out on what vegans are enjoying. As someone without any dietary restrictions, I can say with confidence that the vegan deserts are indistinguishable from non-vegan deserts whether you use taste, quality, or price as a measure.

We went to Star of India one vegan and one psuedo-keto. So, clearly very different dietary habits, but we were both satisfied. There is now a fully vegan menu that is separate from the regular menu. The desserts are brought in from a local vegan bakery that is also owned by the family.
They may have been having a bit of an off night. One man was running the entire restaurant and they were carry-out only. The appetizers were a bit greasy, but tasty. The sauces were particularly good. The Aloo Ghobi was a bit heavy on the cauliflower for our taste. The lamb vindaloo was delicious (not that most people are coming to this blog for a review of that particular dish-but for your non-vegan friends). We did order two orders of naan for carry-out, one specifically vegan. When we got our food home, the naan was all wrapped together, so it was hard to tell if it was all vegan or if he had forgotten that one was supposed to be vegan and it was all buttered. It didn't taste buttery to our non-vegan diner, but our vegan elected not to eat it just in case. So for items that you are ordering that could be made either way, best to be very specific. The red velvet cake was not our favorite. It was a little dense. However, the man running the entire restaurant for the night was nice and helpful and all things considered, very quick and overall the dishes were tasty.

Star of India was great. They had a separate vegan menu and were knowledgeable on vegan, so I had a lot of confidence in ordering and letting the waitress make suggestions. Their fruit chutney was wonderful, I could have eaten just that happily on its' own. It may have been the first time I had Indian food, I'm a bit of a loyalist: pizza, tacos, etc. - I love what I love, but I was up for a new experience, more room to love something new. Glad I went. Thanks for the referral Vegan Toledo!

Star of India is 100% my favorite restaurant in Toledo. The family is wonderful, the food is delicious, the vegan options are many. Chana Masala <3
