Update 4/7/18

We were excited to check out the new downtown location today. Same great vegan options and loved the atmosphere.

9/11/16

We had a delightful meal at Fowl & Fodder on Saturday evening. This restaurant prides itself on locally-sourced ingredients from sustainable farms. We went there a couple years ago soon after it first opened and found that there was little to choose for vegans (a lot of focus on meat and cheeses). But we tried it again after reading on their web site that they had vegan options (hint to restaurants, please be open about your vegan-friendly choices!). We are glad that we went again.

First off, the server was very knowledgeable about a vegan diet and helpful in navigating the menu. We had three vegan options for dinner: a black bean veggie burger, Korean BBQ tempeh tacos and an Asian peanut salad. We opted for the tacos and the Asian peanut salad. The tacos were great; the tempeh almost tasted like it was salt-cured and had a rich BBQ taste. The tacos were covered with fresh shredded carrots. With the tacos, we had a choice of sides. Vegan options include raw kale chips, potato wedges, white bean salad, a small salad or apple slaw. We chose the slaw, which had a sweet and vinegary taste, and had the rare (at least in restaurants) combination of tasting delicious and being healthy. The Asian peanut salad had a kale base, apples, green onions, carrots, cabbage and delicious Asian peanut sauce. The salad had surprises in every bite and made for a great entrée.

Fowl & Fodder has several smoothies that are vegan (made with almond milk) and they serve fresh juices as well. They also serve breakfast 7 days a week, and have one vegan option: avocado toast. We look forward to trying that as there is such a dearth of good, hearty vegan breakfast options in the region.

We love the commitment of Fowl & Fodder to locally-sourced, organic food. Efforts like this help create a demand for better agricultural practices in Northwest Ohio. Also, Fowl & Fodder works with Beyond Basics Health Consulting (BBHC), a nutrition consulting company in Toledo. There are BBHC approved items on the menu, all vegan. We like that a restaurant is committed as well to helping people make healthy choices!

Fowl & Fodder’s menu changes on a seasonal basis. This review was based on the Late Summer menu. We look forward to returning again!

In our quest for good vegan food, we decided to drive up to Saline, Michigan (slightly less than an hour drive from most of the Toledo area) and visit Salt Springs Brewery, a place suggested by several members of the Toledo Area Vegans and Vegetarians Facebook Group.
(Here's the link to the Facebook group in case you're not already a member!)

We ordered the Tempeh Reuben (make sure to let them know you're vegan and they'll use vegan mozzarella and a vegan sammy sauce) and the Incredibly Tasty Tofu Sandwich, along with a serving of fries and a side salad. The Tempeh Reuben was delicious, with chunks of tender tempeh slathered with a delicious sauce as well as sauerkraut made from Ann Arbor's artisanal company The Brinery. This sandwich was delicious and well worth the drive.

The tofu sandwich was very nice too and was covered with a sweet-and-sour type of sauce. That along with the kimchi made this a very creative sandwich as well. The fries were pretty good and the side salad was simple but a nice contrast to the more heavier pub fare of the rest of the meal.

For dessert, there was a cookie option but we chose a slice of chocolate cake as well as a slice of carrot cake, both vegan, and made by Avalon Bakery in Detroit. They were rich, with a nice amount of frosting, and the portions were just the way we like them: reasonable (we have little self-control when it comes to desserts and so it's best to have a modest size!).

They also do flatbreads and can substitute Daiya cheese on any of their pizzas. Next time we go back, we will have the Local Mushroom pizza but we're glad that this time we stopped with our two sandwiches and two pieces of cake! This is a brewery too, and so they have a range of craft beers all brewed in-house, ranging from light beer (Kolsch) to IPAs to stouts. They even have suggestions on pairings with the food. There are also wine options with special blends from Michigan wineries.

Finally, Wednesdays are Vegan Wednesday with special dishes created just for that day. They post the menu by 5 p.m. on their Facebook page. We are excited to make the drive on a Wednesday. But rest assured that their normal menu has lots of great vegan options!

One final note… our waiter was very knowledgeable about vegan options. A little bit of training can make a big difference.

Okay, one last note! Note to Toledo-area restaurants: We shouldn't have to drive to Michigan to get a vegan Reuben sandwich!

The Chipotle/Subway model where you pick out ingredients in front of you has been expanded to pitas (Pita Pit), pizza (Blaze, Pizza Fire), sushi rolls (Fusian), healthy bowls (Core Life) and now What the Fried Rice expands that model to fried rice and noodles.

The deal is that you pick your protein (tofu or none for vegans), your veggies (many choices), your grains or noodles (white or brown rice, cauliflower pearls, udon noodles or pad thai noodles are the vegan options) and finally your sauce (yellow curry or traditional soy are the vegan options).

They cook up your order and it is freshly made. One thing that we liked is that they make sure to fry vegan orders separately so you don't have to worry about your food touching oil or a grill that had recently touched meat.

There are a lot of vegetables to choose from, most which are traditional for Asian cuisine (e.g., bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, mushrooms, cabbage, basil). We chose udon noodles with yellow curry and a fried brown rice with a traditional soy sauce. We enjoyed both, though there is a fair amount of oil in these dishes.

We enjoyed our meals and thought the portions were just the right size.  There is dining space but it also seems like a lot of their business is take-out.

WTF-R is a local business. We applaud their effort, and think that it is great that they make a strong effort to avoid cross-contamination with non-vegan dishes, something that many restaurants aren't that good at.

We're excited to return and try more combinations!

We tried Ye Olde Durty Bird as we had heard that they had vegan options. This is pub fare food and like most pub fare – it's heavy on the meat and the cheese. To their credit, though, there is one vegan option (it's a start). We both had the Vegetarian "Fauxlafel" Burger, which is made vegan by withholding the tzatziki sauce (props to Durty Bird for mentioning this suggestion in the menu).

We had two versions, one served as described in the menu and another made in a wrap. The original version is served in a lettuce wrap, and so think of it as placed inside a big chunk of lettuce.  The sandwich has arugula, cucumbers, carrots, radish and a nice Tahini soy vinaigrette. They had several types of wraps (e.g., spinach), but we chose the traditional wrap.

Both wraps were delicious. The lettuce version was a bit harder to eat, but still was nicely done. Most vegan bar food seems to be an afterthought, check the box ("yes, we have a vegan option"), if they have an option at all. This wrap seemed nicely crafted and was quite tasty. The tahini soy vinaigrette added some nice flavors and the falafel was just the right mix of fried and tender.

We enjoyed our wraps and look forward to returning when we crave some good pub food.

Tiger Bakery stands out among the many Mediterranean restaurants in Toledo in that it probably has more diverse vegan options than other places. This is a deli where you order from the counter and there seems to be a rotating choice of options with many standbys. There is some cafe style seating though we have always ordered to go.

They have traditional dishes such as veggie grape leaves, fatoosh salad, hummus, falafel and baba ghanoush. This time that we went, we ordered these dishes, along with several lentil and potato dishes. There are also several hot food options as well.  The dishes are not labeled vegan but each time that we have gone the staff person has been very helpful in identifying which items are okay and which ones are not.

There is also a limited grocery section with selections of traditional Mediterranean items such as olives, oils and dates.  Finally, we were excited that we found some vegan baklava that a week later, we are still craving more!

Make sure to check out Tiger Bakery and Deli for a wide range of vegan options that are freshly cooked and delicious!

This review is based upon the Central Avenue location.

Update 02/27/18

We loved the newest vegan dish at Registry Bistro. They rotate their menu seasonally and seem to always have a vegan entree. For dinner, we had the Brussels sprouts as an appetizer, followed by their newest vegan dish: Mediterranean “meatballs” with tofu feta and coconut yogurt stewed tomatoes with olives and lemon. For dessert, they still had their vegan chocolate tart with beet sauce.

The appetizer had a large number of fried brussel sprouts, though to be honest, as we have reduced the amount of oil in our diet, we found them a bit too heavy. Others might like them more than we did. On the other hand, we LOVED the Mediterranean "meatballs." They tasted nutty and had a very nice texture and the tofu feta was delicious. We really believe that one of the keys to vegan cooking is creative use of sauces. This one rocked it. The dessert was a nice treat, with the beet sauce really tasting like beets.

With the entree, chef Erika Rapp really knocked it out of the park. We are already planning our repeat visit.

Picture

We must admit that we have a soft spot for Registry Bistro and that it is perhaps our favorite fine dining restaurant in the area. In terms of vegan options, chef Erika Rapp always makes sure there is at least one clearly-marked vegan entrée on their seasonally rotating menu. It is always comforting to see a clearly-marked item on the menu as that removes any ambiguity and confusion. For our ideal restaurant experience, however, we would like several choices so that we can both sample a vegan entrée and share our food. Nearly every time, the chef has been able to accommodate us by creating an off-the-menu vegan entrée that is often even better than the dish listed on the menu. The restaurant prides itself by using locally-sourced seasonal vegetables and these spontaneous dishes are often creative mixtures of what is currently available.

The menu is generally heavy on the meats, though we have found the servers to be very knowledgeable about possible modifications that can be made and so there are generally choices between several appetizers and salads. Finally, every time we have gone, they have had a vegan sorbet, often blackberry cabernet, available for dessert. We don't ever expect that there will be vegan dessert options when we dine out and so this is always a nice treat!

This past Thursday, we split a Bibb salad (modified to be vegan), had the vegan-labeled pan-roasted Romanesco “Steak” with Cannellini and Kohirabi Kimchai in a saffron-tomato broth. The “steak” was a roasted Romanesco, which seemed to be a hybrid between cauliflower and broccoli. Finally, they modified a dish that originally had gnocchi and replaced that with lentils with a golden cauliflower puree, along with mushrooms and fiddlehead ferns.

We love how they have refurbished the ground floor of the old Secor Hotel and created an atmosphere that is contemporary, with a space laden with rotating single-artist art shows housed by River House Arts. The cocktail menu has unique takes on classic cocktails (Rachel recommends the Retro-Fashioned!), the craft beer menu has something for all and the wine menu is one of the best in the city. Also, we feel like the prices are quite reasonable for the dining experience that you get. Check it out!

UPDATE: Macs N' Melts has closed

Macs N' Melts has several vegan options. Although this place celebrates cheese with signs such as "the secret ingredient is always cheese," they carry Daiya. Although they do make a vegan cheese sauce for macaroni, they did not have it the night we went. In fact, one of the managers said that a lot of vegans have been coming in for donuts and ordering other items. He suggested calling ahead to see if they have the vegan cheese sauce for macaroni.

They were still able to make sandwiches. We ordered The Farmer's Market sandwich, substituting daiya cheese for traditional cheeses. The sandwich came on multigrain bread and had oven-roasted tomatoes, English cucumbers, spinach and roasted red peppers. We also made a build-your-own sandwich with Daiya, Chipotle peppers, spinach, tomatoes and cauliflower.  Both sandwiches were grilled and both were tasty. Please note that the multigrain is the only vegan bread currently on the menu.

Although Macs N' Melts looks like a national chain, it is a local business with just this one location in Perrysburg (the Westgate one apparently closed as of December 2018). We like that they have several vegan options—and that on their menu board it states to ask about vegan options—and we look forward to trying their vegan macaroni and cheese soon. When we do, we'll make sure to post an update.

Catering REcommendations Needed

2/11/2018

One of our goals at Vegan Toledo is to encourage and support restaurants that are doing a good job, as well as to nudge those that could do better. Until now, we have only published reviews that are based on our own firsthand experience.

The bulk of questions we have been getting lately are about catering and special events for vegans in the area, from vegan wedding cakes to cool venues to host vegans with their omni friends and family.

In order to help these folks as best we can (since we've only bought one vegan wedding cake and don't have huge parties all the time), we are reaching out to our community to learn more about your catering recommendations in the Toledo area. Please consider filling out this brief survey about any recent catering experiences you've had. If you have a catering company, please encourage your customers to fill one out.

Thanks for your help!

There are a lot of great communities in NW Ohio that do not have a vegetarian/vegan restaurant.  Within the last year, Toledo finally got one. Bowling Green, despite its large number of college students, doesn't have one.  But Napoleon does!

We made the drive from Perrysburg (about 30 minutes) on a Saturday to try out Season's Eatings and were so happy that we did.

It's a cafe and marketplace as well as a bakery (Kyra's Bakery Connection is located inside the cafe). We ordered two soups, one tomato-based and another that was a vegetable mix that had a nice coriander seasoning. For our next course, we had roasted-celery hummus as well as a chickpea salad, both that were quite good.  There is a chip bar that includes bags of chips that are available for purchase, so it was nice to try out a variety of pitas with the hummus.

For the main course, we had two burgers, one a broccoli burger and another one made of black beans.  Both were served on freshly made bread and both were delicious. We both agreed that the broccoli burger is likely the best vegan burger we've had in NW Ohio. It had a rich flavor that had a slight broccoli taste as well as rich nuttiness.

For dessert, there was gluten-free vegan brownie that was moist and very delicious!

This is homemade vegan food with everything freshly made within the cafe. The atmosphere is charming too, with cloth napkins and plates that look like you're eating at home (different colors and shapes).  Everything is vegetarian, though not everything is vegan.  Just make sure to ask as the staff is knowledgeable about their food as they make it!

The marketplace has snacks, trinkets, and food items, many that are from the area and region. We really enjoyed our time at Season's Eatings and will plan to return soon.  Downtown Napoleon is charming; one of the regions best microbreweries is right down the street, Flatrock.  Make it a day trip!

NOTE: Holey Toledough is no longer co-located with Macs n' Melts. They are only operating the food truck, which does not carry vegan options. One of the most requested vegan items in the Toledo area has been vegan donuts. We've had great vegan donuts around the country and so we knew that it could be done. To their credit, Holey Toledough worked on a particular recipe, took advice from vegans in the area and finally rolled out their vegan donuts. They are available at the two Macs N Melts stores, one in Toledo and one in Perrysburg.

They have offered a variety of flavors and seem to have three at any time, though they can sell out quickly. There is a peanut butter and jelly-filled donut that has grape jam along with a subtle peanut butter that might be in the donut or in the sugar glaze (or both) topped with chopped peanuts. There is a vegan apple fritter that is rich with sugar glaze. Also, we have had two varieties of vegan glazed donuts. The first time a lemon thyme glazed cake donut was available; the most recent time there was a lime ginger donut. The lemon thyme had more of a subtle flavor and the lime ginger was more forward.

The donuts aren't labeled vegan and so just make sure to ask the staff which ones are vegan when you go (We'd love it if there were a sign--ask about our vegan donut options, in case you just stumbled in--may of us wouldn't think to ask if we hadn't heard about it on Facebook.). They seemed to be trained well on which ones were vegan. In fact, one of the staff members in the Perrysburg location made a point to inform people who ordered the vegan donuts and ate them in the store: "by the way, that donut was vegan. Make sure to tell your vegan friends that they can get donuts here." We appreciated the outreach.

The first time we went was around lunchtime and there was only one vegan variety left; this most recent time we went on a Saturday morning and all three were available. So go early!

We are excited about this partnership between Macs N Melts and Holey Toledough and were excited to find out that Macs N Melts has vegan options as well, and so look out for a future review.

In terms of the vegan wish list, now that we have vegan donuts available, it's time for a restaurant to step up and offer a robust menu of vegan breakfast options (tofu scrambler please!) and we sure hope somebody can put a vegan banh mi sandwich on their menu too!

Grumpy's has really upped their vegan choices. They still have their sweet potato vegan burger on their regular menu, but they have been having lots of vegan specials. When we went recently, three of the specials were vegan. We tried them all!

The Magpies Vegan Grilled Cheese had dairy-free mozzarella, vegan pesto, a healthy amount of spinach and tomato served on sourdough bread. The Vegan BLT had eggplant bacon, lettuce, tomato and vegan mayo on toasted sourdough bread. They had a Beyond Meat Burger as well.

The Grilled Cheese was both of our favorites; we are partial to pesto and so often in restaurants it is not vegan. The pesto had a rich taste and the good amount of spinach was a nice touch, too. The Vegan BLT was delicious too, with the eggplant bacon as a nice surprise, thinly sliced and marinated in a rich sauce. We did like the Beyond Meat Burger too, but the Grilled Cheese and Vegan BLT were truly creative.

Last time we were there (during the summer), there were no vegan desserts. This time, they had a vegan sugar cookie and a vegan brownie, both freshly made and a nice modest portion, so that you can decide whether you want seconds or if you want to exert control and stop at one!

We hope that all three of these vegan dishes get put on the regular menu. It was a great lunch!!!

Grumpy’s is one of Toledo’s classic downtown lunch spots (33 years in business), winning lots of awards for their burgers. Although most of the menu is off-limits to vegans, they do carry a Homemade Sweet Potato Vegan Burger that comes on a whole wheat bun, with avocado, red onion and Dijon mustard along with a side of baked kale chips. The burger was tasty and we appreciated the avocado as a nice touch (we subbed tomato for red onions for one burger).

As vegans, veggie burgers are often a mixed bag with many of them not being vegan. Often wait-staff are unclear whether there is egg in the veggie patty or in the bun. We appreciate Grumpy’s having a special burger for vegans (they have a separate vegetarian, non-vegan burger as well).

We were told that some of the salads could be modified to be vegan and so you could have other options as well. Grumpy’s has a lot of baked goods, cookies and pies. Unfortunately, none were vegan (hint, hint).

Social posts matter!  We visited the Original Sub Shop & Deli to try out their vegan chickpea salad sub after seeing a delicious photo on their Facebook page. The Original Sub Shop & Deli has been a fixture, open for nearly 40 years! In terms of vegan options, the vegan chickpea salad sub is a new creation and addition to their regular menu (though not posted anywhere we saw yet, so you need to ask for it), a vegan take on their traditional chicken salad with chickpeas substituting for meat. We ordered that, along with two vegetarian subs that were modified to be vegan by replacing cheese with hummus.

The Original Mediterranean has marinated vegetables, including tasty cole slaw, topped in our case with hummus. The Zen Goat has fresh mushrooms (a lot of them!), roasted red peppers and grilled onions. The vegan chicken salad had a tasty curry sauce. All subs were served on freshly made bread that was sweet and had a nice texture. We loved all three of the subs and are already hungry to come back and get more.

There are some vegan side options including tabouleh, hummus with pitas and roasted vegetables. Thank you Original Sub Shop & Deli for coming up with a new vegan option. It really is darn good!

Update 1/23/18

We just wanted to update our review of Yer Mom's House of Eats as we had a chance to go back for lunch and found that they had greatly expanded their vegan options. They had two vegan soups, a roasted garlic and tomato soup and a harvest bisque. We ordered both and enjoyed them a lot. The harvest bisque had a unique savory taste that reminded us of the spices prevalent from a Thanksgiving dinner along with slivered almonds, which was a nice touch. The roasted garlic tomato soup had bits of quinoa in it along with a hearty garlic taste.

There are lots of additional vegan options, including tacos, a quesadilla that is vegan, several sandwiches and several bowls. This time we ordered the Vegan Back to Cauli sandwich and The Other Vegan Bowl. The sandwich had curried cauliflower, hummus, smoked quinoa and some other delicious toppings whereas the vegan bowl had curried cauliflower as well as other roasted vegetables, greens and rice noodles.

We love how they keep expanding their menu and rotating soups. It's well worth a trip to downtown Toledo for lunch. They have expanded their space (right across from the Main Library) and are thinking about expanding to have limited evening hours. We hope that they do!!!

6/4/17

We’ve been meaning to try several of Downtown Toledo’s lunch spots and were excited to be able to eat at Yer Mom’s House of Eats, located across from the Main Branch of the Toledo Public Library in the first floor of an old office building.

This is a lunch spot with rotating soups, sandwiches and tacos. They have six soups and try to make several of them vegan. When we were there, four out of the six were vegan: Potato and Leek, Veg with Chickpea, Sweet Potato Bisque with Almonds and Chilled Melon with Almonds. We ordered the Veg with Chickpea and couldn’t resist trying the Chilled Melon as well. Both were delicious, though the melon soup was unique and totally delicious with chilled pureed melon topped with toasted almonds to give it some body.

In terms of entrees, we had the Herbivore Tacos, which has black-eyed peas and other vegetables, as well as the Springtime for Vegans salad, which also had black-eyed peas and garbanzos, chopped greens, pickled beets and sunflower shoots. Both were delicious and complimented each other, with the tacos having more body and the salad on the lighter side.

Finally, for dessert we shared a gourmet peanut butter and jelly sandwich (called The Kid at Heart on the menu) made on toasted crusty white bread, with peanut butter and strawberry jelly, all served warm. It was really a nice treat at the end of an amazing meal.

This is a great lunch spot with people who really know how to put together a meal.  They have an option called Take It or Leave It, which is a Chef’s creation. Next time we’re back (very soon!), we plan on asking for a vegan version of the Chef’s creation. And we can’t wait to try out new soups. We really applaud the team at Yer Mom’s House of Eats for having good, tasty and healthy options for vegans. Bravo!

We had Blaze Pizza a while ago when traveling in Orlando and were excited that they opened a restaurant in Toledo. It's very simple to get a nice vegan pizza. The dough is vegan and the red and spicy red sauce are vegan. They have vegan cheese and a host of vegetable options, including traditional ones such as mushrooms, basil and sauteed onions as well as some other neat ones like roasted garlic and zucchini. You choose the toppings as a worker adds them to your pizza.

And then they put it in the high temperature oven for 180 seconds and finally they call your name. There are some vegan last minute add-ons that they can add to your pizza including arugula, buffalo sauce and balsamic drizzle. When they found out we were vegan, the workers automatically changed gloves and worked diligently to avoid cross-contamination with meat products.

We each ordered our own pizzas and found that the 9-inch build-your-own was a nice and filling lunch. Blaze Pizza is very similar to Pizza Fire. Although others may have done a side-by-side comparison, we found them comparable in taste, price and both had vegan cheese! Blaze seemed to have slightly more vegetable options and we liked the roasted garlic. Pizza Fire had fresh basil growing in-house and we liked that touch. Overall, both were delicious!

Peta has a nice entry on how to order vegan at Blaze: https://www.peta2.com/vegan-life/vegan-options-at-blaze-pizza/

What took us so long to eat here?!? We finally made it to CoreLife Eatery and are excited that we did. We ordered each of the clearly labeled vegan dishes with no modifications: the Sriracha ginger roasted tofu green bowl, the Sriracha ginger tofu and ancient grains grain bowl and the shiitake mushroom and roasted tofu broth bowl. Each of these included some tasty roasted tofu, and had a mixture of greens and other delights. The green bowl and the grain bowl were nearly identical except for dressing and the grain bowl included warm quinoa. We found that all of them were tasty and healthy, with the grain and green bowls rich with greens and the broth bowl had a nice vegetable broth and a mixture of vegetables that did include some greens.

You can also build your own bowl, with the choice of a green bowl (think salad), grain bowl (quinoa, brown rice or rice noodles) or broth bowl (think soup obviously!). Then you can choose up to 4 ingredients with many vegan options (tomatoes, mandarin oranges, black beans, ginger, chick peas and on and on) along with some ingredients that cost extra (avocado, roasted tofu and falafel). There are also many dressings that are vegan (clearly labeled in their menu). Finally, there is a plate option that allows you to order a root vegetable medley or a seasonal medley (currently it looks like a Brussel sprouts mix).

The ingredients are fresh. Avocado is taken straight from the fruit and ginger is freshly grated in front of you. Finally, they have an interesting array of beverage choices including gourmet green tea mixes (we sampled the apple cider green tea beverage) and lemonades. We treated ourselves to a beet lemonade and enjoyed it.

We found the food very delicious and healthy. This is one of the few places in Toledo where you could get a true whole foods, plant-based meal and have lots of options. Also, there are meat options so if you are dining with omnivores, they will have many choices as well.
